I Dream of Jeannie was created by Sidney Sheldon and ran for five seasons from 1965 – 1970 on NBC. The first season was filmed in black and white and then in color for the second through the fifth. The same day the show was originally picked up Barbara Eden discovered she was pregnant and made and attempt not to do the series. Lucky for us and the show she decided to stay. As we all know this show was a light comedy played out within the peace & love hippie era of the 1960s. The combining factors that seem to have led to the success of the show are color, camp and comedy with an adorable genie in love with a nervous hero. One of the most remembered items for most fans is the colorful purple Jeannie bottle prop used as Jeannie’s home. The purple style design painted on the bottle was created by the show’s art director Robert Purcell and is still widely replicated by many artists right up to today; providing many fans with a recreation of a most beloved keepsake. The bottle was made by the Jim Beam Company in 1964.
